Today at work we decided to go for a team lunch. We usually go altogether on Fridays for a burrito, but this time we decided to try something new: Jamie’s Italian, one of the famous Jamie Oliver restaurants.

I’ve got to say I wasn’t expecting too much from it as I had been quite disappointed when I tried a few months ago Jamie’s Italian in Leicester Square. The food wasn’t good, the atmosphere far too busy and we were seated with my friend on the lower floor which isn’t the best – prefer the ground floor if possible.

But anyway today was a bright sunny day and it was the perfect time to give a second chance!
I recommend you to book in advance if you can as the place gets very busy at lunch time, even for just 2 or 3 people (you can book online, very easy).

I liked the restaurant as it was well laid out: high ceilings, many banquette boxes but also some regular tables for larger groups, and fairly luminous thanks to large bay-windows on one side that allow al fresco dinner when the sun is around!
The decoration is nice and simple, mostly made of wood, including a wall made up of Vespa head lights. Original!

So what can we enjoy at Jamie’s? Well mostly Italian antipasti and pasta, plus several meat dishes.
We all went for pasta to honour Italian cuisine We were two to go for Monachelle Puttanesca, a very simple meal made of shell pasta with tomato sauce, capers, chilli, anchovies, parsley and olives. Pasta were cooked al dente, I like that! The whole thing was fairly tasty, a bit spicy and well served. Others went for tagliatelle bolognese and apparently enjoyed them. The dish of the day was tagliatelle and lamb in a red wine sauce with vegetables and parmesan – it was too much for me but the one who ordered it seemed to really appreciate his plate.
Don’t forget to ask for gratted parmigiano!

On the side we shared two Italian bread baskets. I found them quite small, had expected something a bit more sophisticated… Oh and crispy polenta chips – was ok but I like less and less fried things. And I’m too used to my mum’s recipe who cooks polenta in a pan with gratted parmesan on top – just delicious.

Also our vegan fellow got a special meal on demand! They prepared a large salad just for her, and it looked yummy!

> Tips: try their antipasti planks, they look awesome – especially to share!

> Verdict: Overall the experience was definitely better than expected we had a nice time and enjoyed our lunch.
Prices are little bit too high for my taste though. Count £3.75 for the bread basket, around £5-£7 for antipasti and £10-£13 for pasta. Sides around £3. I know this is the usual price for this kind of restaurant, but still, it feels a little bit too much to me, even if portions were alright.
By the way, our lunch has been… “embellished” by the presence of two celebrities – David Morrissey and Richard E. Grant – seating in tables around woohoo! Would it be the place to be seen? Haha

Infos: Jamie’s Italian – Unit 1078, Westfield Shopping Centre, Ariel Way, London, W12 7GB – 020 8090 9070 – Shepherd’s Bush or Wood Lane stations – open 12noon-11pm Monday to Saturday, 12noon-10.30pm Sunday

Peace, Love & Ice Cream.

This is my message of the day. This is actually my everyday motto. Because life is always better with an ice cream, even if the sun isn’t out there.
And this time I decided to change my habits and try something new – again!

Yes, after DriDri - that was already a GREAT surprise, and different than my local (Scoop) – I went to Gelatorino, highly recommended by a colleague of mine.
Yes, “real Italian Gelateria” mushroomed everywhere in London this summer. But I’ve got to say until now it’s been a faultless round!

Here at Gelatorino, ice-creams are made by the gelatai with the artisanal machines sitting next to the counter. Apparently you can even ask what’s in and maybe sample a freshly made flavour.
Ice-creams are hidden beneath steel lids (“pozzetti”) to keep them fresh and top quality – I kinda like to see what the flavour I order looks like, but pozzetti are for the good of the texture so… can’t complain.
Flavours are varied – more ice creams available than sorbets though – and here are my favourites heartily recommended:

Hazelnut

Gianduja – chocolate and hazelnut speciality from Torino

Breakfast in Turin – coffee with choc chips

Pistachio and Nougat are very good too. I didn’t like Zabaglione though (based on the traditional italian Marsala recipe), weird taste.
I haven’t tried any sorbet, but my dear sidekick – GELATI LOVER as well – found them very tasty, so I think we can trust her
Next time I should give Dark Chocolate sorbet a go to compare with DriDri’s one that I like so much. Actually talking about DriDri, I’d say it’s quite comparable. However if you want to feel the real pure taste of a raw material such as hazelnut, maybe DriDri would be more authentic and lighter, whereas Gelatorino is slightly more sweet and creamy (but not too much, just as it should be). In both cases you can feel from taste that ingredients are very good quality.

On top of that, the special touch resides for sure in the extra dollop of Gianduja chocolate! That’s just deliciously delicious! Don’t wait too long, ice-cream melts down very quickly while the melted Gianduja gets frozen even more quickly.

The chef Alberto Marchetti is a multiple prize-winning gelato Maestro from Turin – maybe that’s why it’s so smooth and velvety!

Located in Covent Garden, the gelateria is quite small. There are a couple of tables outside as well as in the back of the shop where a little corner called “La Bottega” has been dedicated to the exposition of products from a small range of Turin-based artisanal producers. You can find gressini, biscuits, chocolate and other nice treats.

Prices are a bit above other places where I usually go – count £3 for the small cup and about £4 for regular. Cornetto look huge.

> Tips:

coffee available – espresso, cappuccino and caffe latte, made the Italian way. Hot chocolate made with freshly-melted gianduja and teas are also served, as well as a range of Italian juices and soft-drinks (of which Pago and San Pellegrino lemon woohoo!).

“Affogato” speciality cup: a gourmet speciality-gelato with melted gianduja, fresh zabaione, a shot of espresso, fresh fruit or “panna montata” whipped cream.

take-away insulated boxes which keep gelato at the perfect consistency for up to an hour during transport.

> Verdict: Gosh I feel like I’m always giving high rates, but I can’t help it, that place is one more 5-star place. No matter the weather, no matter the day, winter or summer, treat yourself and go for a sweety frozen adventure at Gelatorino. You won’t regret it! (Congrats, you just gained 3kg!)

“All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.”
-John Gunther

Do you agree?
Well I definitely do!
And I did enjoy a great leisurely breakfast last Sunday at the Breakfast Club near Angel station.

This is a chain with 4 locations in London – Hoxton – Angel – Soho – Spitalfields – spreading sun and energy on your breakfast.
They first opened in Soho in 2005 and then quickly grew with success until their last baby that appeared in Spitalfields in May 2011 – I’m sure they won’t stop there. But for now, I’m going to talk about the one located on the lovely Camden Passage in Angel.

We got to this little yellow box around 11.30am on a Sunday.
First off, expect to queue outside for a bit – yes, they’re victim of their own success – but don’t worry, it’s moving quickly. Large groups should avoid that address as the place is quite small!

The restaurant is on the raised ground floor of a small building. After climbing up a few steps, you come face to face with a long and messy bar and busy waiters all around. At this point, you already get the feeling of the place.
To put you in the mood, listen to that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8cCPH1qnYI (and forget the video clip).

Surroundings are made of more or less random stuff – flags, big clock, old pictures, cups, photos, fairy lights – hanging all over the place on raw brick walls. On the front side you can seat next to high windows with view on the street, whereas on the other side you can benefit from the light going through the glass roof – nice. Tables are very close to each other and invite you to share with people next to you. You get it, no room for intimacy here. That’s why people usually come in groups of 3 or 4

— Fork side
The menu is varied and it’s hard to choose! I wanted to try everythiiiiing.
You can easily go for classic salmon and scrambled eggs (~£8.50) served on toasted bread. The portion is well served and good quality. The salad on the side was quite unnecessary though.

Then you HAVE TO try their PANCAKES!
We had the berries ones (~£6), served with mapple syrup and vanilla ice-cream. Fluffy, sweet and definitely not enough! We want mooore!
You can say from the pic that berries are on top rather than in the pancake itself – in some way I prefer it like that.

Otherwise if you’re a British breakfast lover, some big stuff lie on the menu including the inevitable bacon/sausage/hash browns/beans.
And light options are not forgotten of course: porridge, muesli, fruit salad.

— Cup side
You can accompany your meal with a good squeezed orange juice (~£3) or, for the more adventurous, a fresh smoothie (~£4) – I recommend the “Big Breakfast” (strawberry, banana, oats, honey, yoghurt and milk).
If you’re cold, go for a hot chocolate with shamallows on top! The hot chocolate itself isn’t amazing, just a fair one, quite sweet, but I kinda liked it because of shamallows. I don’t know, it was fitting well with the whole atmosphere on a Backstreet Boys song haha

The service is young and very nice. We didn’t wait for long to get our meal. It was just a bit harder to catch waiters as they were all very busy all the time. There were apparently some mistakes in the orders of tables around us – so I guess either waiters were overwhelmed or cookers were undermanned according to the job offer stuck on the window.

> Verdict: It’s definitely a place where I’ll go back to enjoy a good brunch in a young and lively atmosphere! Prices are aligned with similar shops. I’m sure some people would argue it’s not the best breakfast they ever had – but to me the whole experience was great. You go there for fun, because you want to have a great meal with people you have fun with on silly songs

> Tips:

Brunch served 9-5 every day

Lunch & dinner served Mon-Fri from 12pm and Sat-Sun from 5pm (sandwiches, salads, burgers, pies, jacket)

Happy hour 6-8 in Hoxton and Angel – Bring your own wine or beer in Soho

Outside seating available

You can even call and take your sunny breakfast away!

Let the morning time drop all its petals on me, life I love you, all is groovy!

Forget the surrounding agitation and the glass’n'glitter style just for the duration of a good meal and come enjoy this calm and traditional atmosphere.
You’ll need to be attentive to make sure you don’t miss it as its façade is very very discreet (just next to Fig & Olive). Fortunately they put some tables as well as a board outside so we notice there’s a restaurant living there!

If you’re not used to the Persian cuisine, simply remember that most of the dishes come with rice – usually saffron rice – and are based on lamb or chicken. Persian rice is to me the best! They have an arduous way to cook it, by rinsing it several times, using a dishcloth around the lid etc., but at the end, this is absolutely perfect. My top favourite thing about Persian rice is the “tadig”, golden crust of rice, but unfortunately I never found it in any restaurant, only at Persian friends’ house (home made is always the best anyway).

I advise you to go for a starter + a main course. I haven’t tested any dessert, but they don’t have many choices on the menu and savouries are usually much better than sweets in Persian restaurants. However if you have the chance to go to a Persian shop, go for biscuits and other sweets as they are particularly refined. In London I’d recommend Reza (345 Kensington High Street, West Kensington, London W8 6NW), good products and very nice people

Anyway let’s get back to Shandis. The most common meal in Iran is called “Koobideh” or “Chelow kabab”, which consists of minced lamb mixed with parsley and chopped onions and served with rice – differently cooked depending on the mood or the place. Black pepper, sumac and turmeric are usually added to the lamb, and the latter gives a slightly yellow or green colour to the meat. If you go for that, it’s a safe bet, you can’t be disappointed.

This time, I had one of my favourite Persian dish: Zereshk Polo. If only I could eat that every single day… Doesn’t it look delicious?
Zereshk Polo is made of barberry rice with chicken. Barberry rice is saffron rice cooked with those tart little berries, almonds, pistachios and butter.
The chicken is slowly cooked during 2h in oven with onion, garlic and pepper.
At the end, you get a very tender meat with a perfect rice. Berries give a slight sweet and sour taste which is the secret of the dish.

At Shandis, you feel a bit like eating at home – i.e. great quality. Portions are enough, and well presented although not extremely sophisticated.

Two suggestions for starters – very traditional:

salad olivieh: diced chicken, potatoes, peas, carrots, eggs, gherkins and mayonaise

masto-khiar: strained yoghurt with diced cucumber and dried mint – very refreshing

This comes with some flat bread.
Don’t hesitate to order several starters to share – they’re really worth it.

For those of you who are big fans of sweet and sour experiences, go for Khoreshte Fessenjan or Shirin Polo which are among Persian specialities.
Shisha and wifi available.

Prices: £3 for starters, between £6 and £11 for main courses and £3.50 for desserts.

> Verdict: It is always a pleasure to go to Shandis, either for lunch or diner, with friends or loved one. Impeccable service. I highly recommend that hidden little gem. No effort to make, it’s simple, yummy and affordable. What else?

PS: thanks to my sweet love for taking me to this nice place as a surprise to enjoy a delightful evening

I know it’s almost autumn, but there’s no reason to avoid ice-creams! I’m a proponent of “ice-cream day is everyday” and that’s how I ended up eating at least one ice-cream per day last summer – a little daily pleasure of which you get used to very VERY quickly.

I’ve got my local, and a few other good places in areas where I like to stroll. But this summer, a new place opened in London: DriDri! This brand new gelateria is worth the trip believe me

What’s different?

Well first, let’s talk about the essential: the taste.
The DriDri taste is very different than any other ice-cream I ever tested in London. It is fresh, it is light (not as sweet as usual), it feels natural.

Among the classic flavours I tried, there is for instance Nocciola (hazelnut), Biscotto (cookies and cream), and Bacio (chocolate and hazelnut). The Nocciola surprised me as it was very tasteful, for once I could really feel the taste of the hazelnut, without any other intrusive flavour. I also took a spoon of Crema DriDri, their signature flavour based on the traditional Italian Crema with the addition of caramelized sesame. It was ok but I’ve never been a huge fan of crema. The addition of caramelized sesame makes it better though.

Among the unusual flavours, you can find cherry, liquirizia (pure licorice from Calabria) and extra noir chocolate sorbet.
I only tried the latter and… it’s absolutely astonishing! You have to try this chocolate sorbet! It has everything of the chocolate ice-cream but more refined, lighter, better. It’s the first time I can see the chocolate flavour as a sorbet, and I want to thank DriDri for that brilliant initiative!

Ice-creams are made in store everyday.
Also they are using organic fresh milk from the finest farms selected across England, and fresh season fruits from a selection of European countries such as France, Italy, Spain. They mention on their website that their ice-creams are very low in fat and they don’t use any artificial flavourings, colourings, emulsifiers preservatives or non-natural thickeners. That may explain this light and natural taste that is quite unusual.

Flavours of the season: biscotto, crema DriDri, lampone (raspberry), fragola (strawberry).

> Verdict: Try it and enjoy this new frozen experience! You won’t be disappointed. At the moment, there are only 3 shops in London. I’ve been to the Notting Hill one, located along Portobello Road. This might be part of your next Saturday trip to the market (be careful, obviously that small shop is overcrowded that day… prefer another day in the week). Nothing to mention about prices, they’re comparable to any other ice-cream shop.

Infos: DriDri – 189 Portobello Road, London, W11 2ED – 020 3490 5027 – Notting Hill Gate station

While summer is slowly fading away, it’s time to get back to blogging. C’est la rentrée ! Hope it will last a bit longer than before.
My come back began with an article about the restaurant Fish! where I spent a lovely evening a few days ago, when it was still warm outside. The day after, we went with my friend to another new place to keep enjoying outdoor spots while it’s still possible!

I’ve got to say I really enjoy getting back to this “new-places-discovery” life And today’s about Tom’s Terrace, the outdoor bar of Somerset House.

Short summary about Somerset House, directly from their website:

Somerset House is a spectacular neo-classical building in the heart of London, sitting between the Strand and the River Thames. During summer months 55 fountains dance in the courtyard, and in winter you can skate on London’s favourite ice rink. Somerset House also hosts open-air concerts and films, contemporary art and design exhibitions, family workshops and free guided tours of spaces usually hidden to visitors.

Yes, hefty program.
I’ve already been to the Courtauld Gallery, located right at Somerset House, and I quite enjoyed it. It’s not big and so you can see nice art exhibitions without getting tired just because they seem to be endless. The fountains in the courtyard are very relaxing, you can sit at one of the tables available all around and enjoy the sight. Last time some kids were running all around in the water, they were enjoying themselves so much, I wish I could join them!!

After passing the courtyard, you enter the other part of Somerset House called the Seamen’s Hall which is a very beautiful building combining Corinthian columns with a classical black and white marble floor. Next time I’ll definitely try to visit that part!

But for now, let’s go further down from the Seamen’s Hall to Tom’s Terrace and its views across the River Thames.

(image from Somerset House website)

Most of the terrace is covered by a big white tent as you can see on the picture. There’s a bar and various kinds of sits: high chairs/tables, couches, and classic tables. The atmosphere is light and trendy. You can relax on a sofa with a nice cocktail and some lounge music.
We shared a milk chocolate mousse with caramelized hazelnuts – absolutely delicious!!! (I wanted to get another one, just for myself!).

> Verdict: This is definitely the place to go if you want to have a drink outside in a great environment where you can feel you’re a bit cut from the rest of the city. Highly recommended during summer. I wouldn’t say it’s overpriced – to give you a rough idea:

Bubbles: glass around £9

Wine: glass around £6

Cocktails: £9.50 – soft: £4.50

Delicious chocolate mousse: £7.75

No bookings!
DJ nights throughout the summer!
Next step: try out Tom’s Kitchen where Michelin starred chef Tom Aikens might treat us to a delicious meal.

I was missing fish!
And I wanted to catch up with my friend as we’ve not seen each other often lately.
So after some Googling, we picked up that place to try out last Friday eve.

Why fish!?

because we wanted something new

because we wanted something not too expensive

because it is next to Borough Market so we could expect quite a good fish (maybe)

Only good reasons as you can see. And we can say it was as expected.

The outdoor area was very busy as it was a warm evening FOR ONCE IN LONDON.

The only bad point about being outside was the noisy tube we could hear as a continuous background sound. You get used to it of course, but it’s a bit disturbing at the beginning.

Here is an overview of the menu:

I went for steamed sea bream with herb and garlic butter, served with vegetables and mashed potato.

And the result was quite good actually! I wasn’t expecting something spectacular, just a simple fresh meal – and I’ve been pleased by that.

I recommend to make your own selection: pick your favourite fish, a sauce and some side orders. That’s definitely better than having predefined course, as did my dear friend…

He realised afterwards that what he ordered was a simple cod fish and chips with mushy peas.

Well it’s traditional and it wasn’t bad. But to me, fish and chips should stick to pubs! If you go to a fish place, then have something a bit more “exotic”

At least the quantity was there.

Oh and we shared a prawn cocktail as a starter. You can pass on that one, nothing special. Prawns lie down a bed of salad and are topped by the usual creamy prawn sauce – kind of mayonnaise – of which I’m not a big fan.

> Verdict: As you can see on the menu, prices are quite fair – maybe a bit overpriced for dishes such as fish and chips and some starters. But I’d say it’s a good place to go if you’re around. Also they’re doing take away almost everyday, especially on market days (Thu/Fri/Sat).

If you’ve never been to Borough Market, that’s a good occasion to try. This market is full of delicious things and very nice to walk through. I particularly enjoy testing various cheeses and eating on the go either veggie burgers, just-made gnocchi (only on Thu/Fri) or libanese hummus, plus a portion of blueberries for a fresh touch. Don’t forget to step by the milk shop to grab a “Crème caramel” or an amazing aerial chocolate mousse. Yummmyyyyyyy

Infos: Fish! – Cathedral Street, Borough Market, London, SE1 9AL – 020 7407 3803 – London Bridge station – open Mon-Thur 11.30am-11pm, Fri-Sat midday-11pm, Sun midday-10.30pm

It’s been a while I had not been to an Italian place. Lately two of my closest friends came back to London and so we got back to our old way of life: spending all our time together, usually in restaurants, especially when it’s raining!

Last weekend we went to Amalfi as one of us went there about 6-7 months ago before leaving the Big Smoke and she remembered their delicious gnocchi.

To be honest I wouldn’t have been to this restaurant without her as it sounds to me a bit “basic and fake” from outside – hard to describe my feeling, but I’d say it seemed to be this kind of place made for tourists. I was wrong! A bit!

In the heart of Soho, with a direct view on the busy Old Compton street, this little restaurant offers a good menu of Italian specialities. Obviously we couldn’t test everything, but I can easily tell you what to have (or not).
The first time we went, we’ve been welcomed by a nice young waiter in a musical atmosphere – actually Italian pop music, conte partiroooooo (a thought of Andrea Bocelli). He was very nice and helpful. For instance he brought a proper scoop when one of my friends asked to test the vanilla ice-cream, while we were expecting just a simple sample in a spoon…

What’s on order?
Well of course there was one portion of gnocchi. Note they’re not on the menu anymore, but my friend asked and so they cooked one serving. She got a good plate with tomato sauce on top – well cooked!
The other friend had lasagna. That’s where the shoe pinched. Bad taste, small portion, disappointing. Actually she was that disappointed because she literally likes lasagna and was expecting something similar to the ones from Italian Kitchen. Actually I’d like to make a point about that: I described them as really good and well-served. Wrong! We went back there last weekend as well, to compare haha, and… what a disillusion! We were so enthusiastic about going back to our usual canteen and eating lasagna we enjoyed so much before summer. Unfortunately it’s not the same chef anymore and we could taste that, in a wrong way

Anyway let’s go back to what I was talking about: Amalfi. Avoid lasagna.
As for me, I tried two antipasti: caprese (tomato/mozzarella salad) and bruschetta. The former was incredibly not tasty. Wrong choice. But the latter one was ok, not the best I ever had, but it was ok.

As gnocchi were in the air, we came back there the day after and this time, the three of us had gnocchi – really good!
Just one thing: as I said, note it’s not on the menu – and if you want a portion, ask for a main dish size, not appetizer.
Another friend had fish but… weird fish. He counted on a good piece of fish and he got a kind of fishcake his face was quite funny haha but it was apparently pretty good.
Oh there’s something you need to take to supplement your meal: a basket of bread. You can choose between different types, it’s usually pizza bread and can be with cheese on top, or pesto or else. Go for it and gressini, always good for an Italian meal!

The important part of a luncheon or dinner for me is the dessert (sweets lover… it will lost me one day…). One of us went for a classical ice-cream vanilla/chocolate and was happy of her choice. She was afraid to get a yellow vanilla that you usually buy in supermarkets. Instead of that she got a generous cup of delicious ice-cream. I’ve got to say the chocolate flavour was really good.
They tested the tiramisu as well. This is usually my favorite dessert, but I was not hungry anymore to have even a spoon. From my point of you, it looked a bit dry, and apparently it did taste so. From what they said, it wasn’t good at all! No miss then

Edit 08.10.10: spaghettis are good as well though definitely not enough! They don’t have gnocchi anymore…

Prices are told to be reasonable, but I thought it was a bit too much compared to some other places like Côte where we had a better meal for almost the same bill. About £6 for starters and desserts, £10-12 for main courses.

> Tips: This place is probably good to have a coffee outside on their terrace area.

> Verdict: at the end of the day, I’d say this place is a basic Italian restaurant. Nothing very special. Some dishes are to be strongly avoided. The atmosphere is simple and unpretentious. We enjoyed the fact to meet a very nice and helpful staff, especially a senior waiter who treated us really kindly. I think it could be a good venue before/after theater.

PS: sorry for the quality of the pictures took with my phone. I didn’t have my camera, but I definitely need to take it back to give you better snapshots!

A few days ago I met a friend I haven’t seen for a while and we decided to try out a new place to celebrate our reunion
He suggested a pub in Soho but unfortunately it was hosting a private event that evening… Sad. However it will definitely be subject to a forthcoming visit (thus a review!) as it seemed very attractive from outside.

So we just walked randomly and felt back on Côte, a French restaurant in Wardour Street, a street we treasure!
You’re well welcomed by a smiling staff and the atmosphere is softened as we like.

We started with a pissaladière. Do you know that? Well that’s a delicious warm flatbread from Nice with caramelised onions, anchovies and olives. If you go to South of France, you definitely need to get one! But we didn’t really stick to the tradition that time as we ordered it with reblochon cheese on top instead of anchovies. I’m a purist and so I was a bit perplexed concerning this choice, but I’ve been actually well surprised! Though I’d recommend the traditional one with anchovies anyway.
I’ve got to say we waited for ages before getting our pissaladière and bread. The service was very slow!

To go on I got a nice piece of chicken from Brittany called “poulet breton” served with fries and provencale sauce.
The chicken was tender and the sauce tasty. The latter made me think about the ratatouille’s taste.
My friend chose the fish parmentier which included cod, haddock, prawn and salmon. He apparently enjoyed it.

We were a bit in a rush and so we didn’t have time for a dessert to my great dismay… they seem to be famous for their creme caramel and creme brulee which are house specialities. Next time I hope!

Instead we had a succulent Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream at cinema, watching “Going the distance”. Light and funny movie by the way.

In the end, this place was very pleasant for a calm dinner.
Prices were aligned on usual practice: pissaladiere £4, and £12 for main courses. If I remember desserts were about £5 each.

> Verdict: – actually we were wondering if English people would really go to this kind of restaurant. Not a question of culture, but during our conversation we realised that we’re used to go mostly to pubs with our English fellows! Anyway as I said, don’t expect a quick service, at least in this branch. Note they have many locations in the UK and up to 10 in London. Wifi available.

Yesterday evening I was supposed to attend a geeky event around Farringdon with a friend of mine. Unfortunately there was such a big queue when we arrived that we would have to wait for an hour to get in. So we just gave it up.
Instead we looked for a good place to tickle our taste buds and picked randomly The Green which seemed to be more lively and busy than other spots in the area.

It was around 7pm and people were sitting outside over a beer, chatting and laughing. Good atmosphere
As usual the dinner room is upstairs. It was empty at that time, but became suddenly full from 7.30pm!
Although the menu looked very British to me, it sounded quite odd at the same time with for instance “chicken liver parfait with figs and toast” or “pan fried fillet of hake, bacon, salsify, broccoli and hollandaise”. British cuisine is odd anyway! I went for an haddock fillet and potato omelette whereas my fellow pitched on a roast beef and mashed potatoes. We also ordered a portion of fries to share, just in case.

We’ve been quite amazed to get bread and butter while waiting! And not basic bread, but diverse ones such as wholemeal bread, white bread, raisin bread and poppy-seeds bread! Ok it wasn’t like Pain Quotidien, but still, we didn’t expect that in a pub, without asking anything.
The meat was well cooked and my friend enjoyed it. I liked the way it was served on a wooden board.
My dish was good as well though I didn’t expect that! I thought I’d get an haddock fillet on a side and an omelette on the other. Instead I got a small hot pan containing the haddock-potato omelette. Surprising! Even if it was a bit fat and I’m not used to that anymore, it was good to eat such a greasy meal with fries haha.

We enjoyed the surroundings as well as it looked different from usual pubs. It includes different styles of tables and chairs, everything made of wood.
The lady who served us was really nice and welcoming. And she wore a delicious musk perfume!

About the price, I didn’t find it incredibly expensive. About £5 for my dish as it was a starter, and £12 for the beef. Ok maybe the beef was a bit overpriced. £3 for the skinny fries.

> Tips: apparently you can hire the space for business events as well as for weddings. Outside catering available.

> Verdict: good to find a nice pub with nice atmosphere in this area which I don’t know that much. You can go for it without being disappointed. Finally I’m sure we spent a better evening in this pub than at the geeky event!
