The Real Greek – Westfield

March 1, 2012

Again, I took ages to write that one… about last Friday’s lunch! That was a beautiful sunny day, almost like summer time, and thus it was the perfect occasion to enjoy a Mediterranean meal at The Real Greek.
That restaurant chain was founded in 1999 and has now 7 branches across London.

As usual we went to the Westfield branch, located on the Southern terrace – ideal to eat outside and get tanned for the time of a lunch before going back to the sad artificial light of the office.

The menu is a bit confusing as it offers a massive list of hot and cold mezze but no proper dish. It’s basically made to be shared.
We’ve tried the hummus, good although a bit dry – crudités, not much to say about fresh-cut carrot, celery and cucumber – and vine leaves (dolmades), that I didn’t test myself, but seemed to be well prepared.
Among hot mezze, you can find meat skewers, grilled halloumi and for the most adventurous, specialities with obscure names such as tiropitakia, loukaniko or even boureki – I’ll keep the mystery about them.

Apart from mezze, they also have souvlaki – greek wrap – described “like a kebab, only much better”. Well that’s definitely true. However it’s not the best I ever had, let’s not exaggerate!
So if you’re a bit hungry, go for the platters. For example the platter for two (£21) includes: three souvlaki (one lamb, one halloumi and one chicken), halved and served with any two salads or sides. It’s worth it! As sides, we tried the saffron rice, where you can’t taste any saffron flavour – new potatoes in lemon juice – and standard chips.

Overall I’d say that if you’re not very hungry, get some mezze (between £4 and £7 each) and you’ll be ok. But if you want a real meal, the best deal is definitely the platter to share.
If you’re lost and don’t know what to choose, they also offer 3 selections of mezze, sides and salads for two people between £26 and £30 (you see, platters are better value for money!).

Our vegan fellow was particularly pleased by the fact they put vegetarian but also vegan options in their menu. High five!

> Verdict: this place is great for sunny days, to seat outside and feel you’re miles away from London (ok, more or less 🙂 ). Wraps are good, mezze are variable and sides are ok. Service is a bit slow, but the staff is very kind and friendly.
